HTML, JavaScript or Python: what to learn first for web development

You can build a working web page after one evening of HTML. You cannot build much with JavaScript or Python until you know what they are acting on. That is why our Front-End and Full-Stack paths start with HTML and CSS. Our Python path starts with Python and our Backend path with Node.js, because they target server work.

Start with HTML and CSS

HTML describes the content of a page: headings, paragraphs, links, forms. CSS controls how that content looks and how it rearranges on a phone. Two or three weeks of steady practice gets you to a point where you can rebuild a simple landing page from a screenshot.

Aim for these checkpoints before you move on:

• You can structure a page with header, nav, main and footer without looking it up.
• You can lay out a two-column page with Flexbox or Grid.
• Your page works at 320px wide with no horizontal scroll.

Then JavaScript, if you want to build interfaces

JavaScript runs in every browser, so you see results right away. You click a button and something changes. If your goal is front-end work, React or full-stack JavaScript, learn it second. Spend your first month on variables, functions, arrays and objects, then on the DOM, then on fetch and async code.

Or Python, if you want backend or data work

Python reads close to plain English, and many beginners find its error messages easier to follow. Choose it first if you want to build APIs with Flask or Django, automate tasks or work near data. You still need HTML for the pages your Django app renders, so plan a short HTML course alongside it.

A simple rule

Pick the language that matches the first project you want to finish. If that project is a portfolio site, start with HTML. If it is a small tool that reads a spreadsheet, start with Python. Finishing that first project teaches you more than the choice of language does.

How long it takes

Plan for about three months of part-time study, eight to ten hours a week, to go from zero to a small interactive project in either language. Our course pages list the hours for each course, so you can add them up for your own plan.
